Twenty-Seven

If only it were possible for the nip in the air to cool her temper. Madison’s insides were quaking with rage from having her hands tied with this case. At least Winston was getting himself to the hotel where they’d be talking with Steven Malone and not tagging along with her and Terry.

The sky was clear of clouds and the sun bright, a true contrast to the storm that passed through yesterday.

She parked the department car in the drop-off area, and a man in an overcoat, who worked with the hotel, walked toward them.

He smiled pleasantly. “Good evening, miss.” He glanced at Terry but poured his charm on Madison.

She flashed a badge, and his expression died. She brought misery wherever she went—and she didn’t give a crap right now. “We’re here on police business.”

“Oh,” the man said with surprise.

Madison brushed past him and was the first through the automatic sliding doors, Terry and the hotel employee close on her heels.

“They can help you at the front desk, ma’am,” the hotel employee said. “Just on the right.”

She still had her badge out and held it up for the male clerk at the desk. “The room number for Steven Malone?”

“One moment.” The clerk clicked some keys on the keyboard and went for the phone.

“What are you doing?” Madison asked.

“I’m calling to let him know the police are here to see him.” The clerk pointed to his monitor. “There have been specific instructions that he be notified when someone comes to see him.”

Madison let out a deep breath. “Of course there was.”

“Excuse me?” The clerk’s tone made his remark sound genuine, but his eyes told her he’d heard her just fine.

Madison flailed a hand toward the phone. “Go ahead. Do what you have to do.”

The clerk picked up the receiver, pushed the buttons to call Malone’s room, and a few seconds later, he was saying, “Mr. Malone, the police are here to see—”

“Detectives from Major Crimes,” Madison clarified.

The clerk shared that information, paused as he listened to Steven, then said, “Yes, I’ll tell them.” The clerk hung up. “He’s asked me to tell you to wait down here until his lawyer and a Sergeant Winston arrive. You can make yourself comfortable in the lounge or take a seat.” He pointed behind Madison and Terry to the lavish lobby with its posh seating and floor-to-ceiling waterfall.

So much for getting in ahead of Sergeant Winston and Blake Golden. “It’s imperative that we speak with him immed—”

“I’m sure you’re not used to being told ‘no.’” With that, Mr. Congeniality went out the window. “But Mr. Malone is our client, and we put our clients first. Please, take a seat.” This time, the clerk gestured to the sitting area with his entire hand.

Madison didn’t budge but stared the man down. Terry tugged on her elbow.

“Come on, let’s just do as he said.”

She glowered at her partner. “I don’t like this, Terry.”

“You can’t really be surprised by this. Blake Golden’s not about to sit this out. He’d be on his way—”

“You felt the cold front, too?”

He smirked.
